Biography of Alan McKenzie Dyer

Alan Dyer
Alan Dyer

Alan McKenzie Dyer graduated from the University of Glasgow MBChB in 1960.

Alan was born on 11th November 1936 in Glasgow. He was educated at Hillhead Academy and in his early years, showed a propensity for mathematics and science, perhaps inherited from his father: a graduate in mathematics from the University of Glasgow.

After graduation from the University of Glasgow, MBChB 1960, Dyer became interested in ophthalmology and gained a London University diploma, and a residency at an Ayrshire hospital. Dyer moved to Alberta, Canada and took the Canadian Fellowship examination in 1966. He accepted an offer from an American company to take part in the development of hospitals in Saudi Arabia, where he set up an ophthalmology unit in a new hospital in Dahran. Here he became interested in the science of refraction. On returning to Alberta, he continued developing the possibilities of automated refraction.

Dr. Dyer was a pioneer in automated refraction and was the inventor and founder of Eyelogic Systems. The idea of automatic refraction came to him as a young ophthalmologist. He was intrigued by automation being adopted in other medical practices and imagined a computerised system to test patient’s eyes for glasses. After eight years of development, from 1986, he launched the Eyelogic system which is used, today, to perform millions of refractions around the world.

The formation of Eyelogic Systems Inc. in 1996 established the distribution of the system in Canada and internationally.

Alan Dyer died on 12th May 2014.
