Biography of Jessie Crawford Gilchrist
Jessie Crawford Gilchrist graduated MB ChB from the University in 1916.
Born in Chicago, USA, she was the daughter of a clergyman, Alex Gilchrist. The family later relocated to Springburn, whereupon her father worked at the United Free Church on Broomfield Road. Jessie commenced her studies in 1911 and graduated in 1916 with a degree in Medicine. During her time at the University, she amassed a considerable number of prizes: first-class in Systematic Zoology, Anatomy (in the women's department), Clinical Surgery (St Mungo Chair) and Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health; and second-class in Physics, Systematic Chemistry, Practical Pharmacy, Clinical Medicine, Materia Medica and Therapeutics, Embryology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Muirhead Chair) and Practical Pathology.
