Biography of William Bingham

William Bingham matriculated as an Arts student at the University in 1774.

He was born in Ireland, so of James a famrer of Kilmore, County Down. Bingham became a Presbyterian minister in his native County Down until he emigrated to the USA in 1793. There he founded Bingham School in North Carolina and served as its headmaster from 1793 to 1826, setting a precedent for the Bingham family, who continued to establish and serve at educational institutions throughout North Carolina. From 1801 to 1805 Bingham was also appointed Professor of Ancient Languages at the University of North Carolina.

Reverend Bingham died at Mount Repose on 25 February 1826.
