Biography of Hugh Shaw Dunn Garven
Hugh Shaw Dunn Garven was a triple Glasgow graduate with a BSc in 1920; MB ChB in 1923, and MD 1925. He was a Senior Lecturer (1949-1952) and Reader in Histology in the University from 1952 until he retired in 1964.
Upon graduation in 1925 with the thesis, The nerve endings in the panniculus carnosus of the hedgehog, Garven went on to serve as a distinguished medical missionary in Manchuria, where he was Professor of Physiology and Dean of the Faculty at Moukden Medical College (now Sheng Jing Hospital part of the China Medical University), from 1926 until 1941. He left China for Canada and came to Britain where he took over the histology section of the Institute of Physiology. In 1946 he returned to Moukden as principal of the College but had to leave in 1948 with the Cultural Revolution and returned to Glasgow University.
Dr Garven died in Glasgow on 7 February 1968.
