Biography of Wilhelmina Behan
Wilhelmina Behan, nee Hughes (1939-2005) joined the University in 1974 as Lecturer in the Department of Pathology. She subsequently became Senior Lecturer and, in 2000, Professor of Muscle Pathology.
Behan studied at the University of Bristol, graduating MB ChB in 1962 with First Class Honours. She received Distinctions in Pathology and Medicine and was awarded the University Gold Medal. After house jobs in Bristol, she moved to Cambridge in 1963 to train in pathology at Addenbrooke's Hospital. In 1966, she moved to the United States and spent seven years working in Boston, Massachussets. After joining the University in 1974, she pursued her interest in neuromuscular diseases, particularly polymyositis and chronic fatigue syndrome. She diagnosed the first post mortem case of AIDS in Scotland.
At the University, Behan organised the Honours BSc course in Molecular and Cellular Pathology. In 1999, she set up a second course on 'Unusual Infections of the Nervous System'. Much of her research work was carried out with her husband Peter Behan, Professor of Neurology.Summary
