Eide was born on 13 October 1894 in West Berkerly, California, son of his namesake, Sören Anton Eide, a Lloyd's surveyor. The family moved back to Fjosanger, Bergen, in Norway before two sons, Sören and Paulus, left to attend the University of Glasgow.
