William McLure was born in St. Quivox, Ayrshire in 1800. He studied Theology at the University of Glasgow from 1821 to 1825.

In 1827 McLure became the Minister of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Nassau, Bahamas where he stayed until his death in 1863.
