Robert Hamilton 
Biography of Robert Hamilton
Robert Hamilton matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1801, studying Latin and Greek. The brother of George William Hamilton (1786-1857), he was the son of John Hamilton, West India merchant and Lord Provost of Glasgow. His mother, Helen Bogle, was sister of Robert Bogle of Gilmorehill (the current estate on which the University of Glasgow is located) of the Glasgow merchant firm Bogle & Co. Whilst his brother supervised enslaved people, Robert Hamilton was located in Kingston working as a merchant trading in slave-grown produce like sugar. The University of Glasgow alumni managed two estates with resident enslaved people in St Thomas in the Vale in Jamaica for their maternal cousin, Archibald Bogle. Possessed of a small fortune, Hamilton returned to England and died in London in 1840.
