Biography of Ira Earle Farrington

Ira Earle Farrington studied for a Bachelors degree in medicine and surgery at the University of Glasgow from 1948-52 and graduated from there in 1953. During his time at the University he took classes in Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Anatomy.

Farrington came to the University of Glasgow from his native home, The Bahamas. After graduating he stayed in Glasgow and became a Lecturer of Anatomy at the University and a house officer at the Western Infirmary. He was also named as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow.

After ten years in Glasgow he returned to the Bahamas where he became the Bahamas' first certified General and Consultant Surgeon and was head of the Department of Surgery at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau for most of his life.

In 1989 Dr Farrington was named MBE. In 2002 he was awarded the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award. He was also an Honorary Fellow of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas Academy of Medical Sciences and President of the Bahamas Island Medical Association.

Ira Earle Farrington passed away in Nassau in 2013.
