Biography of Hamilton Currie

Hamilton Currie jnr graduated MBChB from the University in 1943. He was born at Blantyre, Nyasaland, modern day Malawi, son of Hamilton, a missionary.

Currie, having also obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, joined the Church of Scotland Medical Mission in 1944 and worked at Sulenkama, Qumbu, South Africa. He was transferred to Central Africa, where he worked at Ekwendeni in Malawi, then at Mwenzo and latterly at Chitambo in Zambia. He was noted for his remarkable knowledge of African languages and cultures, and remained at Chitambo hospital when it came under Government control as a missionary associate.

He died on 23 April 1974 at Chitambo. His daughter, Dr Marion (Currie) Taylor, published Livingstone’s Hospital: the Story of Chitambo.
