Biography of John Smith Moffat
John Smith Moffat graduated MA from the University in 1926. He was born at the Livingstonia Mission, Kondowe, Nyasaland, modern day Malawi, son of missionary Malcolm Moffat, and great-grandson of the pioneer missionary, Robert Moffat (1795-1883).
Moffat enrolled at the University in 1923 together with his brother, Unwin Jackson Moffat. Over a period of three years, he took classes in Latin, Mathematics, Political Economy, English, Moral Philosophy, Scottish History, History and Botany.
Moffat pursued a career in the colonial civil services, giving his temporary contact address care of Dr Prentice, the Scottish medical missionary, at Kennetpans, Clackmannan. Moffat went on to undertake roles such as the Commissioner for Native Affairs, and later became leader of the Liberal party in Northern Rhodesia, the Central African Party. He received a Knighthood in 1955.
