Biography of Misha Louvish

Misha Louvish graduated MA from the University in 1931. He was born in Kimpolung, Austria, modern day Câmpulung Moldovenesc, north-eastern Romania, son of Nathan, a letterpress printer, and brother of Ruth Louvish. Brought to Scotland by their father, who established a printing business located at 116 Gorbals Street, they became British citizens in November 1928 and were also known by the surname Lewis.

Louvish enrolled at the University in 1926, aged 17, and attended classes over four years in English and History (1926-27); Moral Philosophy and Italian Comparative Literature (1927-28); English Literature and Language Junior Honours (1928-29); and English Literature and Language Senior Honours (1929-30). He won a first class certificate in Professor William Macneile Dixon's English class of 1926-27. Louvish graduated on 7 November 1931.

In 1937 Louvish worked at Reali School, Haifa, and then in Tel Aviv as an English teacher on a temporary work permit. He returned to Glasgow at the outbreak of the Second World War, working at a boarding-school and hostel for Jewish children evacuated to the countryside, before serving with the British Army in Europe.

Louvish immigrated to Israel in 1949, where he went worked as a journalist and editor of several publications, as well as contributing articles to journals such as the Jewish Frontier, Jerusalem Post and the Jewish Vanguard.

Louvish also used his English skills as a translator, translating many novels, articles and political speeches. He was employed as editor of English publications in the Government Press Office during the trial of Adolf Eichmann.

From 1969, he served as a Deputy Editor of Encyclopaedia Judaica.
