He was born in Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia, son of James, a merchant.
Over a period of three years and four terms, Aiken took classes in Botany, Anatomy, Chemistry Practical Anatomy, Senior Anatomy, Physiology Surgery, Materia Medica and Pathology.
