Biography of Kenneth Henry Dyke OBE
Kenneth Henry Dyke graduated MB ChB from the University in 1917. He was born in Morija, in modern day Lesotho, son of missionary Reverend Robert Henry Dyke, and brother of Eric John, Hamilton William, and Adolph Henry Mabille Dyke.
Dyke enrolled at the University in the summer session of 1912 to study Medicine over the course of five years.
Due to the First World War, Dyke only spent a brief time at the Western Infirmary upon graduation in 1917, before enlisting with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) in East Africa.
After the war, in 1919, Dyke returned to Africa where he worked at Kimberley Hospital, South Africa, before joining the Basutoland Medical Service in 1923, where, by 1945, he had become his brother's successor upon his retirement as Director of Medical Services in Basutoland.
Dyke's contribution and service to Basutoland was recognised when he was appointed OBE in 1947 during King George VI's royal tour of Basutoland.
Following retirement in 1948, Dyke returned to work as Medical Superintendent of the Scott Memorial Hospital, in Morija. In 1954 he accepted the post of medical officer at Grey's Hospital, in Pietermaritzburg.
Dyke died in 1964, and was remembered not only for his medical contribution, but also for his expertise in the Sesotho language, as well as his great knowledge and respect of the Basuto.
