Biography of Janet Kennedy Robertson
Janet Kennedy Robertson (nee Gartshore) graduated MA from the University in 1915, followed by her sister, Margaret Ferguson in 1919.
She was born at Brownsville, Jamaica, daughter of Reverend John Gartshore, a missionary of the United Free Church of Scotland, who was at that time the Minister of Brownsville and Carlisle Memorial, Flint River.
Gartshore enrolled at the University in 1911, taking courses in Geography, English, Logic, French and German, the latter two subjects to honours level.
Returning to Jamaica, 'Jenny Gartshore' became the first headmistress of the Jamaica St Andrew High School for Girls, coming up with the school's motto “Life More Abundant”.
She only served one term at the school before getting married on 15 February 1926, to John Braithwaite Robertson at Pollock United Free Church in Pollokshaws, Glasgow. He was a University Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, where they then resided.
