Gabriel Hercules Malan graduated DPhil from the University in 1916. He was born in Worcester, South Africa, son of George Stephanus, an editor.

Malan had gained his MA from Cape Town before enrolling at the University in 1914 to carry our further study in Psychology and Philosophy. The latter subject he attended with fellow South African, Modiri Molema in session 1914-15.

Mala undertook research on the subject of the dialectical method as conceived by Hegel and the post-Hegelians, and graduated with the thesis An absolute logical criterion in 1916.
