Biography of Marion MacFarlane Crichton
Marion MacFarlane Crichton was born in Hong Kong in 1869 and graduated from the University of Glasgow on 13 April 1897, with honours in Greek and Latin.
She was the daughter of George Crichton, a gentleman, and sister to Jessie Henderson Crichton, who studied at the University at the same time.
Crichton's main period of study at the University was between 1892 and 1897, however her name is listed in the Queen Margaret College enrolment book for German Language and Natural Philosophy classes in 1887-88, and she obtained a prize ticket for History in 1891-2.
During her time at the University, Crichton took classes in History, Latin, Mathematics, Greek, English Literature and English Language, achieving distinction in her studies. In the 1892-3 session she was awarded a first class certificate in Natural Philosophy, and in the 1893-4 session, she was awarded first class certificates in Mathematics and Latin.
Marion married some months after her graduation, on 13 October 1897, at Westbourne Free Parish Church in Partick, to Dr Alexander Oswald Cowan Watson. Her husband was a medical graduate of the University of Edinburgh (1883), and was a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps based in India at the time. Settled in Aberdeen, Watson returned to India as volunteer in 1914. Marion died aged 79 in Aberdeen.
