Mary Clow Cameron was born in 1874, in Glasgow, daughter of Murdoch Cameron, an exceptional obstetrician who was the first to successfully perform a series of Caesarian sections, proving them safe, routine operations.

Cameron enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1898 and graduated MA in 1902. She took classes in French Language & Literature, German Language & Literature, Latin, Logic, Zoology and Mathematics, graduating with honours in French and German.

During her time at the University, Cameron's academic performance was recognised on several occasions; In the 1899-1900 session, she was awarded a prize in Professor Robert Adamson's Logic and Metaphysics class, as well as a Second Class Certificate in both the Systematic and Practical class of Professor John Young's and Professor James Rankin's Zoology course.

Cameron was awarded a prize in Professor Charles Martin's French Language and Literature class in two consecutive years (1900-1901 and 1901-02), a prize offered by the Paris Committee of the Franco-Scottish Society. Finally, in 1901-1902, she won a prize in G.P. Thistlewaite's German Language and Literature Honours class.

In 1922, Cameron was appointed lecturer of French at the University of Glasgow. By that year, she was married to Léon Maurice Pitoy, who was lecturer in French at the University since 1914.

They resigned their positions on 30 September 1937, after 15 and 23 years of service respectively. The following year, the Pitoy Prize was founded, to be awarded annually to the student considered to be the most proficient in Spoken French at the Final Degree Examination for Honours.

Cameron died in April 1964, at the age of 88, and both she and her husband are buried in the Glasgow Western Necropolis.
