Biography of William Heard Shelford

William Heard Shelford was born in Singapore, son of Thomas Shelford, CMG, an East India merchant who was a long serving Member of the Legislative Council and a Municipal Commissioner in Singapore.

Shelford enrolled at the University for one year in 1887 to study Political Economy.

He followed in his father's footsteps in both politics and business within Singapore. He became head of Paterson, Simons and Company, one of the earliest trading houses in Singapore; was Chairman of the Singapore Chamber of Commerce; a committee member of the Straits Settlements Association in 1903; and Director for the Tanjong Pagar Dock Board. He returned Singapore around 1906.
