Biography of Frederick John De Souza
Frederick John De Souza graduted BSc from the University in 1915. He was born in Karachi, Pakistan on 29 September 1892, son of Anthony, head clerk of the Post Office in Karachi.
De Souza enrolled at the University in 1912, aged 20. He studied subjects that included Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering. During his time at the University, he won two prizes; a second class certificate in Geology in session 1914-1915 and was placed second in his Engineering, drawing and design class in session 1915-1916. De Souza graduated BSc in Engineering on 13 November 1915.
After obtaining his degree, De Souza returned to Pakistan and worked as a civil engineer in the peninsula of Manora, Karachi. A Fred J de Souza is reported as being the first Goan appointed by the Secretary of State to the Imperial Service of Railways Engineers in 1916.
