Biography of David Rachman

David Rachman graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1945 with a BSc in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

He was born in Wilno, then part of Poland and today Vilnius, Lithuania. At the age of 5 he moved to Warsaw, Poland, with his mother, Raszel, a dental surgeon, and father, Wulf, a merchant. Before beginning his studies at the University of Glasgow, Rachman worked in Dumfriesshire as an interpreter for the Polish Army for nearly two years. He was 22 when he first matriculated at the University in 1941, where he attended classes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Natural Philosophy, Engineering Drawing, Mechanics, Design, Engineering Production, Electrical Design, Radio Communications and Electrical Theory. He received a bursary from the Polish Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Shipping to help fund his final year studies.

After completing his degree, Rachman became a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, and later senior lecturer at the Royal Technical College (now Strathclyde University). While in this position he designed two of the school's laboratories on Montrose Street.

Throughout his life Rachman fostered relations between Strathclyde and Central and Eastern European universities. He was a lifelong member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, where he also served as a Member of Council for several terms, and a lifelong member and fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. Rachman was awarded the title of Chartered Engineer by the Engineering Council.
