Biography of Charles Hinman Hewes

Charles Hinman Hewes graduated BSc from the University of Glasgow in 1888. He was born at West Chester, New York.

After having graduated from the US Naval Academy, Hewes enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1886, exempt from preliminary examinations. He studied Natural Philosophy, Naval Architecture and Civil Engineering over the course of two years. During his time at the University, Hewes received six prizes for Naval Architecture and Mathematical Physics (1886-87), Senior Class of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Senior and Upper Senior Naval Architecture, and the George Harvey prize in the Junior Class of Office and Field Work in Engineering in 1887-1888. He graduated in April 1888.

Hewes was posted as an Assistant Naval Constructor, to Norfolk, USA, after 1890, but died there of typhoid fever.
