Biography of John MacBraire

John MacBraire was born in 'Hallifax' (according to Josiah Walker's notes) in 1801. His father was James MacBraire, a merchant and philanthropist in St John's, Newfoundland. MacBraire moved to Berwick with his family in 1817.

John MacBraire matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1815. He appears in a list of Josiah Walker's students in Latin, and received a fourth place ranking in Greek that year 'For Propriety of Conduct, Diligence, and Eminent Abilities, displayed during the Session.' W. Innes Addison lists MacBraire as having an MD conferred by the University of Edinburgh in 1824, but it is likely that this refers a different John MacBraire, licensed by the Royal College of London and practicing in that city throughout the 1830s.

MacBraire served as a landlord and magistrate in Berwick, and died in 1839.
