Valentine Martin graduated BSc from the University in 1915. He was born in S£o Paulo, Brazil, son of Julio, an engineer.

Martin enrolled at the Faculty of Science in 1912, aged 19, the year before his brother, John Anthony. He attended classes in Physics Laboratory, Natural Philosophy, Mathematics, Chemistry, Engineering (laboratory and drawing), and Electrical Engineering, graduating BSc in Engineering on 20 April 1915.

Martin was awarded numerous prizes during his studies, among them a first class certificate for Natural Philosophy, under Professor Andrew Gray, in session 1912-13 and 1914-15; the Muir Bursary for Engineering, under Prof J D Cormack; and the Walker Prize for Engineering.
