Biography of William Fleming
William Fleming (1794-1866), nicknamed "Moral Will", was appointed Professor of Oriental Languages at the University in 1831 and was Professor of Moral Philosophy from 1839 to 1866. He was Assistant Librarian from 1818 until 1826; College Chaplain from 1821 to 1826 and from 1832 to 1839, and he was appointed Vice-Rector by Sir Robert Peel.
Fleming matriculated to study at the University in 1806 and graduated DD in 1829. He was Minister of Westruther, 1826 to 1829, and of Old Kilpatrick, 1829 to 1831, before his appointment to the Chair of Oriental Languages.
