John Rook England

Biography of John Rook

John Allan Fynes Rook (1926-1987) was Director of the Hannah Institute and Hannah Professor of Animal Nutrition from 1971 until 1981.

Born in Yorkshire, Rook studied Agricultural Chemistry at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, graduating BSc and DSc. He worked at the National Institute for Research in Dairying at Shinfield from 1954 until he was appointed Professor of Agricultural Chemistry at the University of Leeds in 1965. He moved to Glasgow six years later.

Rook's research interests lay in the nutrition of the dairy cow and the secretion and composition of milk. He was awarded a PhD by the University, and he was made a CBE in 1985. After retiring from his Chair in 1981, he served for five years as Visiting Professor in Animal Nutrition at Wye College, University of London.
