Thomas McCall Anderson
Sir Thomas McCall Anderson (1836-1908) was the University's first Professor of Clinical Medicine, 1874 to 1900; Regius Professor of Practice of Medicine, 1900 to 1908, and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1900 to 1904. He was also an early Medical Chief at the Western Infirmary.
Born in Glasgow, Anderson matriculated to study at the University in 1852 and graduated MD with honours in 1858. He studied at Paris, Wurzburg, Berlin, Vienna and Dublin before becoming, in 1865, Professor of Practice of Medicine at Anderson's College. In 1861 Anderson and Andrew Buchanan founded the Glasgow Skin Dispensary.
Anderson published a number of influential papers on clinical medicine and the well-received text book, A Treatise on Diseases of the Skin (1887). He was knighted in 1905 and appointed Honorary Physician to the King in Scotland in 1907.
