Biography of Alexander Cairncross
Alexander Cairncross (c 1637-1701) was Archbishop of Glasgow and Chancellor of the University from 1684 to 1687.
A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Cairncross became a minister, Bishop of Brechin and then Archbishop of Glasgow. His reluctance to support the relaxation of penal laws against Roman Catholics incurred the displeasure of the Lord Chancellor of Scotland James Drummond, the Earl of Perth, and he was deprived of his See in 1687. He subsequently became Bishop of Raphoe.
