Biography of Archibald Harrington

Archibald Wilson Harrington graduated MB ChB from the University in 1900, and MD in 1903. He became consulting physician to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Muirhead Professor of Medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1934 to 1945.

After graduation, Harrington held positions at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital, Coton Hill Mental Hospital, Stafford, and the Glasgow Fever Hospital. He set up in practice at Glasgow and in 1906 was elected to the staff of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, becoming assistant physician in 1913. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1912. and member of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland.

At the outbreak of the First World War, Harrington joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). He was awarded the Serbian Order of St Sava for his services in the Balkans in 1918.

In 1925 Harrington was appointed lecturer in Clinical Medicine at the University of Glasgow, and in 1934 was made Muirhead Professor of Medicine. He became emeritus professor in 1945, and the next year he was conferred the honorary degree of LLD by the University.

Professor Dr Harrington died on 7 June 1953, aged 75.
