Biography of Thomas Campbell Gibson
Thomas Campbell Gibson graduated MA from the University in 1908. He was born on 29 September 1887 in Swatow (Shàntóu), China, son of John Campbell Gibson, a missionary of the English Presbyterian Mission.
Gibson enrolled at the University in 1904, and over the course of four years he took classes in Political Economy, Moral Philosophy, and Greek and Latin to Honours level. Upon graduation, Gibson undertook theological training at Trinity College before following in his father's footsteps as a missionary at Swatow in 1912. On his father’s death in 1919, Gibson was appointed principal of the Bue-li Theological College in Swatow, a position which he held until 1932.
Gibson was stationed in Singapore and Malaya from 1932, where he would also serve for twenty years. He was also minister of the Prinsep Street congregation.
During the Second World War, Gibson was interned in Changi by the Japanese for over three years. After the war he went on furlough, but returned to Singapore to take part in the founding of Trinity Theological College and the inauguration of the Malayan Christian Council.
Gibson returned to the UK in 1951, ministering at Haltwhistle, Northumberland. He retired to Edinburgh in 1965, and died there on 30 December 1967.
