Biography of Matthew Ignatius Thornton Cassidy

Matthew Ignatius Thornton Cassidy graduated MB from the University in 1909.

He became District Medical Officer in Jamaica, where he married fellow Glasgow graduate and doctor, Marie Alexina Annette Beard in 1913. Together they joined the Royal Medical Corps when WWI broke out. As Lieutenant, he was later promoted to Captain, serving in France, for which he received the British War and British Victory Medals.

The couple returned to Jamaica where they were active members of the community until Cassidy was appointed District Medical Officer in Accra, Gold Coast, modern day Ghana, around 1930.
