Helen Stephen Baird graduated MBChB from the University in 1903. She was born at Hampden, New Zealand, daughter of Reverend James Baird, and was one of five siblings to study Medicine at the University; the others were William Stephen, James Henderson, John Bruce, and Annie Agnes.

Baird obtained a BA from the University of Otago before coming to the University of Glasgow in 1898, from where she graduated on 21 July 1903. She worked at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary upon graduation, returning to New Zealand with her sister in 1905.

Baird started general practice in Invercargill, where she is thought to have been the first female doctor in Southland. She married fellow doctor and Glasgow graduate, James Alexander Cowie at Invercargill, Southland, on 10 January 1908. He was a medical practitioner in Masterton, Wairarapa, North Island.
