Biography of Thomas Whitehead

Thomas Whitehead graduated MA in 1738.

The son of David Whitehead of Bolton, Thomas was born in 1716. He matriculated in 1735, studying Natural Philosophy under Robert Dick.

After graduating Thomas Whitehead became the curate of Bolton, and married in 1746.

His great-grandson, Robert Whitehead, moved to Trieste to work for a marine engineering firm. During the 1860s he invented the torpedo there, his design being known as the Whitehead Fish Torpedo.

Due to the Austrian connections developed by the family during this time, Rev. Thomas Whitehead’s descendants also include the von Trapp singers, who provided the inspiration for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s world-famous musical The Sound of Music.
