Biography of Canon James Cameron Todd
James Cameron Todd graduated BSc from the University in 1884. He was born in Rangoon, Burma, modern day Yangon, Myanmar, son of his namesake.
He was educated at the Royal High School in Edinburgh and enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1881, where he studied subjects as Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, English Literature, Moral Philosophy, Chemistry, Zoology and Geology. Studying under Lord Kelvin, Todd would commemorate those links in 1881 when he opened Kelvin House, a preparatory school in Ruislip, London. It closed in 1977.
He moved to South Africa, where he was ordained deacon by the Bishop of Bloemfontein in 1887. He was curate of Vryburg, Bechuanaland in 1887 and curate of Kimberley, Griqualand from 1887 to 1888. Todd pursued further theological study in the UK graduating BA 1891 and MA 1895 from Christ's College, Cambridge. He was ordained priest in St Paul’s Cathedral in 1890, and Curate at St John’s Hammersmith in 1891.
Todd returned to Natal, where he was appointed Canon of Natal from 1894 to 1904. In 1896 he was founder and rector of Michaelhouse (St Michael's Diocesan College).
Todd returned to London in 1904, where he authored several books and was the owner and headmaster of Netherfields School, Crouch End, London.
