William Rutherford England

Biography of William Rutherford

William Rutherford was given an honorary LLD degree in 1848 for his services as Secretary to the Royal Astronomical Society, London.

William was a mathematician and proved a skilful teacher in the number of teaching posts he assumed throughout his career.

He was a member of the council of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1844 to 1847, and honorary secretary in 1845 and 1846. He was said to have been well versed in both practical and theoretical astronomy and published many mathematical papers.
