Biography of James Niven

James Niven graduated MB CM from the University in 1893. He was born in 1868 in Singapore, then part of the East Indies. His father, Laurence Niven, was a Scottish horticulturalist who was appointed Superintendent of the Botanic Gardens of Singapore (1860-1875). His original landscape design still exists in the present day Botanic Gardens.

Niven returned with his father to Scotland in 1876, aged eight, and first enrolled at the University to study Medicine in 1885. After graduating in 1893, Niven remained in Scotland where he worked as a medical officer in Southend, Argyll.
