Biography of Arthur Montford
Arthur Montford (1934- ) was University Rector from 1971 to 1974.
Born in Glasgow, Montford became a sports journalist and radio broadcaster before joining Scottish Television in 1957 to present its new sports programme, Scotsport. He presented more than 2,000 editions of the programme before he retired in 1989.
Montford's campaign was enthusiastically supported by members of the University Union and by other members of the student body who, at a time of bitter ideological debate in the United Kingdom, were reacting against the tradition of electing heavyweight "political" rectors. His opponents were the television personality Isobel Barnett and the Labour politicians Janey Buchan and Lord George-Brown.
