Margaret Cochran Dewar, Graduation 1894
Margaret Cochran Dewar graduated MB CM in 1894, making her one of the first graduates of the Queen Margaret Medical School and among the first women in Scotland to gain a University degree and the first to receive a university medical qualification.
Dewar was born in Kandy, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1872. She was one of four daughters of John Lewthwaite, a tea planter, to attend the University of Glasgow. Dewar was the first of her sisters to enroll at the University in 1890. In 1893, Dewar received the Mackintosh Bursary. She obtained the Triple Qualification LRCPS in July 1894, graduating MB ChB in October 1894.
After graduation, Dewar practiced an assistant resident doctor in Dumfries Hospital from January 1895; as an assistant at Gartnavel in 1896; and as resident surgeon at Sheffield Hospital in 1897.
On 13 April 1898 in Stirling, Dewar married Charles Allen Porter, a surgeon and professor at Harvard Medical School. They lived in Boston, Massachusetts, where Dewar died at Beverly Farms in 1961.
