Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith (1932-1984) was University Rector from 1905 to 1908.

Born in Yorkshire, Asquith won a scholarship to Balliol College Oxford and was President of the Oxford Union in 1874. He became a lawyer and a journalist, and in 1886 a Liberal MP. He rose through the party ranks to attain the offices of Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary and he was Prime Minister from 1908 until 1916.

Asquith's opponent in the 1905 rectorial election was the Marquis of Linlithgow.
