Biography of James Campbell MacKillop
James Campbell MacKillop graduated MB ChB 1929 with honours in Midwifery and Gynecology.
He was born in Glasgow on the 9th February 1903.
James first matriculated at the University of Glasgow in the session 1922-23 aged 19 and studied Medicine. Over his seven years at the University he would study the subjects required to qualify, subjects like Clinical Medicine, Bacteriology, Histology and Diseases, Midwifery and Gynecology. During his studies, James picked up two Second class certificates and also First Class Honours certificates for Clinical Medicine and Diseases of the Ear (1927-28).
The Glasgow University archives hold a collection of James MacKillop’s notes (DC367), including notes from his undergraduate medical classes and diaries recording his experiences as Advisor in Malariology to the Rome Allied Command (1943-44).
The diaries record Dr MacKillop’s arrival in Naples, his meetings with various officers, and Colonels to discuss the malaria situation in the West of Italy, around the Naples area and his recommendations for the reduction of the disease.
James’ particular interest lay in homeopathy and he became a member of the British Homeopathic Society in 1931. He was elected to the Council in 1935 and was editor of the ‘British Homeopathic Journal’ 1952-1954 and in fact became President of the society for two terms (1967-69). It was during the war that James served in the anti-malaria campaign and was appointed Advisor in Malariology to the Rome Allied Command.
James Campbell MacKillop died in October 1979.
