Biography of John Colhoun
Flight Sergeant John Colhoun was born in Paisley, Scotland, on the 22nd of July 1918, the son of of Patrick and Margaret Theresa Colhoun, of Paisley.
After receiving his 'Certificate of Fitness' on the 4th of October 1936, Colhoun began his studies at the University at the age of 18, enrolling to study for an Arts degree in Session 1936-1937, with the help of the Carnegie Trust Grant. In his first year, Colhoun took classes in History (Ordinary), French (Ordinary) and Geology (Part I)- he was successful and passed French, History (Ordinary) and Geology in June 1937. Unfortunately his father, Patrick, was deceased by this point in John's life, though it is noted that when Patrick was alive he was employed as a 'Labourer.'Throughout his time at the University, Colhoun resided at his home address at '4 Andrews Street, Paisley.
In John's second year at the University in Session 1937-1938, he enrolled for classes in Logic and Metaphysics (Ordinary) and English (Ordinary) which he passed in June 1938,resitting his Scottish History and Literature classes which he passed in September of that year. For this Session and indeed, in his final Session of study in 1938-1939, John was in receipt of a Carnegie Trust Grant and and Education Authority Grant. in his final year Session 1938-1939, he enrolled for classes in History (Higher Ordinary) and English Literature (Higher Ordinary) passing both subjects in June 1939, allowing him to graduate on the 30th of June 1939 with an MA degree.
After graduating from the University, for the year beginning 1st January 1940, John is noted to have been occupied as a 'Teacher' residing at 4 Andrews Street, Paisley.' During the Second World War, John joined the Royal Air Force and became a Flight Sergeant (Pilot). Unfortunately, at the age of only 25, Flight Sergeant John Colhoun was killed on the 16th of September 1943 in Wexford, Ireland. He is buried at Paisley(Hawkhead) Cemetery in Sec. R. Grave 667.He is remembered here, by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and in the University of Glasgow Roll of Honour.
