Biography of David Livingstone

The famous explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) was an alumnus of the University. The David Livingstone (Anderson College) Memorial Prize in Physiology is named for him.

Born in Blantyre, Livingstone was a student at Anderson's College and attended lectures in Greek at the University from 1835 to 1837, while studying Theology at the Congregational Church. He visited Africa as a missionary in 1840, and went on to explore the interior of the continent on a number of famous expeditions.

In 1854 the University awarded him an LLD in his absence, and in 1858 he revisted the old College to thank the Senate and to address the students.
