Asher Asher
Asher Asher (1837-1889) was the first Glasgow-born Jew to obtain a medical degree. The Asher Asher Memorial Medal and Prize is named for him.
After graduating MD from the University in 1856, Asher worked in Glasgow for six years before moving to London. He worked with the London Jewish Board of Guardians to provide health care for poor Jews and became secretary of the Great Synagogue and, in 1870, first secretary of the United Synagogue. He made many trips abroad to advise on improving conditions for for Jewish immigrants. There is a memorial plaque in his memory at the entrance of the synagogue in Garnethill.
