Biography of Sir Graeme Davies
Sir Graeme John Davies (1937-2022) was Principal of the University from 1995 to 2003. He was awarded the honorary degree D Univ in 2004.
Born in New Zealand, Davies graduated from the University of Auckland with a BE in Aeronautical Engineering and a PhD in Materials Science and is also a graduate of St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He taught Metallurgy in New Zealand and England; was Vice Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, 1986 to 1991, and Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, 1992 to 1995. He left Glasgow in 2003 to become Vice-Chancellor of the University of London.
