Biography of Arthur Young

Robert Arthur Young (1863-1948) was a University graduate and the founder of Arthur Young & Co, which amalgamated with Ernst & Whinney in 1989 to form Ernst & Young International. He was a captain of the University XV and played for Glasgow in an inter-city rugby match.

Young was the son of a Glasgow merchant and shipowner who matriculated at the University in 1880 and graduated MA (1883) and LLB (1887). He became an apprentice with the Glasgow solicitors AJ&A Graham before emigrating to the USA and founding the accountancy firm Arthur Young & Co in Chicago in 1906.

The Arthur Young Chair of Accountancy was founded in 1986 with funding from Arthur Young & Co. The chair was renamed the Ernst and Young Chair in 1990.
